The Danish driver struggled with the track, the car and himself at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park during the third round of the USF Juniors’ championship.
There was no lack of speed, and it wasn’t for lack of fighting spirit or effort. However, this weekend’s race at the Canadian racetrack was not what Casper Nissen had hoped for. The 15-year-old racing driver from Toftlund hadn’t had the same training opportunities as many of his competitors, and on a track like this, more time behind the wheel would have been an advantage, he admits:
“I actually had good speed in the car, but it’s very different to the tracks I’ve driven on so far and it took me longer to adapt than I expected. The track requires a different way of driving the car, and I never really got to grips with that,” says an honest Casper Nissen, who during practice had a violent exit that cost hours of hard work for the mechanics at Jay Howard Driver Development, who just about got the car ready for qualifying, where Casper posted the seventh fastest lap time.
The best position in the weekend’s three races was seventh place, which led to a natural disappointment for the otherwise fast South Jutlander. Fortunately, the next race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in early July will be a chance for redemption:
“I’m looking forward to the next race, because it’s a track I’ve already raced on and where I know I’m really good on the move. That’s where my luck will change and I’ll bring home a couple of good results,” says Casper Nissen with the familiar smile in his voice.
Despite the weekend’s disappointment, Casper Nissen is in eighth place in the USF Juniors Championship halfway through the season.
