An accident proved costly for Casper Nissen at Mid-Ohio

The fourth round of the USF Juniors Championship took place at the weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, where the 15-year-old driver from Toftlund showed strong pace throughout but saw two frantic races slip through his fingers.

Casper Nissen secured second place in qualifying, just 0.13 seconds off pole position, thereby setting a solid foundation for the weekend for the Jay Howard Driver Development driver.

However, this promising start did not translate into a good result in Friday’s first race. Casper Nissen was sent off the track without warning by a rival.

“I was run off the track by a driver who quite simply drove straight into me, so I ended up in the barrier,” he says of the collision that took him out of the race. This meant the mechanics had their work cut out to get the car ready for the next race.

In Saturday’s second race, he was back on form, but a penalty for blocking a rival stood in the Dane’s way. After a safety car period, the tyres hadn’t quite reached the right temperature when the race restarted. Once he’d regained his pace, a move up to provisional fourth place was within reach – but once again, the race got in the way of his plans.

“I was in fourth place and ready to overtake, but then two of my team-mates crashed into the wall. Then the yellow flag came out and the safety car was on the track again, and that was the end of it,” he says.

Now there’s just a couple of days’ break before Casper Nissen gets back behind the wheel. This weekend sees a round at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut, where preparations begin with a test day.
